Most animal portraits require photographic references, but I also enjoy sketching the fast moving gestures of dogs and other animals from life.

Success in sculpting animals or people requires knowledge of anatomy as well as behaviors, postures and gestures. Since I live with scottish terriers, I have ample time to observe them and sketch them from life. All of my scottie sculptures are based on sketches from life.

Media includes charcoal, chalk, graphite or silverpoint. Silverpoint is an old masters technique using hand prepared tinted paper and silver stylus, silverpoint drawings will tarnish and darken with age. 

My preference is always to paint landscapes entirely outdoors, from real life. It is sometimes necessary to finish a work indoors, but most of my landscapes are started and finished outdoors.
